independent pottery practice

Welcome to SOMA Ceramics Courses, where we will teach you the skills needed to become an independent potter.

This means you should be able to walk into any studio, sit at any wheel, and keep going on your own. During our time together we will support you in gaining the confidence and knowledge required to troubleshoot any encountered challenges when working with clay. Hopefully we will also begin to explore and develop your personal creative style on this exciting journey.

Courses are suitable for beginners and seasoned practitioners alike. Ages 12+.

Prices are all-inclusive:
White stoneware clay, industry-standard tools and Shimpo wheels, food-safe lead-free glazes, bisque + glaze firings.

Trial Classes

One-off and ad-hoc bookings.

1.5 hours per session.
HKD 520 / 1 session.

Includes post-workshop trimming, glazing, and twice firing.

Handbuilding
Perfect for creating organic, irregular forms.

Handbuilding is tactile and intimate– each piece carries visible traces of your touch.

Wheel
Perfect for creating symmetrical vessels with refined forms.

Wheel throwing is rhythmic and meditative — each piece is shaped through centred pressure and steady hands.

Foundations

Understand and experience the complete pottery process of clay preparation, creation, bis-firing, glaze application, and glaze firing.

You will become very familiar with the essential skills of:

Clay preparation & wedging
Score & slip
Glazing (where applicable)
Studio health and safety practices
Clay properties

Foundations: Sculpture
Handbuilding basics:
Pinching, coiling, slab, textures.

2 hours per session.
HKD 3,100 / 5 sessions.

Foundations: Wheel
Throw and trim cylindrical forms (tumblers, bowls, vases, jugs).

2 hours per session.
HKD 3,100 / 5 sessions.

Specialisations

One-off, seasonal workshops.

Traditional Relief Carving
Design and carve on a flat surface measuring 15 x 20cm.

2 hours per session.
HKD 1,800 / 3 sessions.

Kiln
For complete beginners
Learn best practices for kiln maintenance, packing, and unloading.

2 hours per session.
HKD 720 / 1 session.

Custom Projects

Develop and execute your own ideas
You will be guided through the processes of research, design, and creation.
Design and create larger or more complex works. Combine techniques and manipulate forms. Explore texture and glazing.
